Western Forest Road

Yakushima Forest Road connecting Toudakiguchi to Okawa Falls. This popular spot is renowned for its beautiful “green tunnel” surrounded by evergreen broadleaf trees and for sightings of wildlife like wild Yakushima macaques and Yakushima deer. Boasting one of Japan’s largest evergreen broadleaf forests, its untouched, vividly green scenery exudes an almost mystical atmosphere. It is also an exceptionally valuable area where the “vertical distribution” of vegetation—changing from subtropical to subalpine zones with altitude—can be observed continuously from coast to summit. This region is included within the World Natural Heritage site. It is a tourist attraction offering the rare experience of driving through the pristine forests of a World Natural Heritage site.
